The Doctor walked and walked. Down long corridors and spiralling flights of stairs, through rooms he forgot he had, stopping often to explore something forgotten as though seeing it for the first time.

By the time he reached Sublevel 15, his pockets were stuffed with random items he'd forgotten he had, and he carried a stack of books.

The random items and even the books were not, of course, what he was looking for. He only found what he was looking for when he peeked into a linen closet that the TARDIS had given him a helpful mental nudge toward.

"Lan?"

Curled up in the back of the closet, under a few blankets and towels, there is a sleeping Lan. Or rather, a formerly sleeping Lan who's just startled awake, "Mfh, wha'?! Oh, hello."

"Sorry. Didn't mean to startle you."

A bemused smile crossed his face and he pulled off the wire-rim spectacles he forgot he was wearing. "Why're you hiding in there?"

Lan rearranges the blankets - he can come in here or she can climb out?

"I, I didn't like sleeping out in the open."

There is room for him to sit, and so he does, placing the books on the floor next to them.

"Understandable. Small spaces give a sense of security."

"They do. The TARDIS has been very nice to me; she's so lovely."

Lan will even offer some of the blanket!

"I'm going to have to go back out there, aren't I? Other people will know about what happened, too. I can't hide this?"

"She is, isn't she?" He smiled, joining Lan under the blanket. After a moment, though, the sentimental smile vanished and he looked at her with a quiet sincerity.

"It can't be hidden, no, but I don't think there are very many people who would have done differently in the same situation."

"They're going to look at me and...and I don't know if I can go back to the Nexus. Maybe I'll just find a quiet world and settle for a bit."

LIES. LIES. BRAZEN LIES. We all know that she'd never be able to stick to that. There is just too much to see and do.

The Doctor knows it, too.

"I tried that once. Settling. It didn't last long and now I look back on it, it was dreadful. There's far too much of the Universe to see."

Smile?

Snake-y hugs?

"So, I'll pull myself together and head back out, I suppose. Be a big girl and all that?"

Big hug. He's warm.

"There's no rush. Although we are out of raspberry preserves."

Grin.

He is warm. There will be hugs and little chirpy snuggles. Her colour might even start to come back.

Velvet coats are very good for snuggling. "Only if it wouldn't be any trouble."

Little-known-fact: The Doctor is a sad panda if he has no syrup for his pancakes....

"No trouble at all." She'll get him some of the good syrup then - can't have a sad panda doctor.

"Did you speak to V? Is he okay?"

"The fellow with the mask? I had, actually. He's quite all right. Made short work of the guards." Tiny unhappy flicker there, easily cleared. "I let him know you were safe and he seemed very releived. I expect he'll be contacting you soon."

He's very relaxed, now, as curling up under a blanket with someone will do that to a person.

"You're a very good man, Doctor." Big snakey yawn and snuggling. Nice, warm coat. Nice, warm Doctor. Small, sleepy Lan.

"Is it okay that I stay here a while longer? I can't really sleep out in the open, not yet."

"I don't mind. In fact, I might land up staying here with you, if that's all right." Yawn. Drats, those yawns really are contageous, even across species!

It's like Mad Cow - but sleepier and with less prions.

"Please? I know I'll sleep better if I'm not alone." She's built a fairly comfortable nest/bed out of blankets and pillows. If she can hear his hearts beat, that will help too. Zzzz.

She can hear them, actually.

A quiet moment in a small, cosy space seems to be just what the Doctor ordered. The Gallifreyan in question isn't known for sleeping much, but he's always up for exceptions.
